Chapter Sixteen

Ethan

I didn’t want to leave. If it wasn’t for the funeral, I didn’t think I would leave. Lucas was working hard to keep me in Hawaii. I was very tempted to take him up on the offer to do it. I wanted to stay right where I was. The meeting today was awkward. I knew my team thought I was abandoning them again. Lucas had made it very clear I was in Hawaii. It pissed me off a little to have him announce it like I was cheating on them.

I didn’t have much to pack after my short stay. I tossed in a few things when the door burst open. Jenny and Ava were talking loudly. At first, I thought they were arguing. Then I realized they were both worked up about something. “Is everything okay?” I asked.

“No,” Ava snapped. “That bitch. I swear, I’m going to find a way to shut her down.”

“What bitch are we talking about?”

“Marta Mikkels,” Jenny answered.

“What did she do?” I asked with concern. “Is she here? Is there another report?”

“Not yet,” Ava growled. “That woman. Why? I don’t understand why she won’t leave me alone. She is constantly on my ass. She doesn’t know me! Why is she after me?”

“What happened?” I asked again.

“Some dude was at the coffee shop,” Jenny answered. “I threw stuff at him.”

“Ladies, please,” I begged. “I missed the first half of this story. I need to know what happened.”

“That guy!” Ava threw her hands in the air. “He was there! Again.”

“Who? Where?”

“Tim Lane,” she said.

It took a moment for the name to ring a bell. “The man that stole my thumb drive?”

“That’s the one.” Ava nodded. “He’s back. He was in the coffee shop today. I confronted him, and he ran off.”

“We chased him,” Jenny chimed in.

“You chased him?” I questioned.

“Yes,” Ava nodded with her jaw set. “I asked him what he wanted. Some guy hired him to stalk us and feed him information. That information just happens to show up in Marta’s reports. She’s the one that’s doing this. He came to Hawaii to get information on us. He followed us back to New York, and now he’s back here trying to dig up more dirt on me!”

I shook my head. I couldn’t say I was surprised. “Where did you leave Mr. Tim Lane? Did you hurt him?”

“He walked away unharmed,” Jenny said with disappointment. “I think I should have dumped the soda over his head. “He totally deserved it.”

“I’m sorry,” I said. “This is because of me.”

“No, he was here before you got here,” Ava said. “He was here to find me. To get information about me. I feel so gross. He’s been watching me. Following me. I feel like I need to take a shower.”

“If this is Marta, we’ll find out,” I said. “I have to get back to the funeral. I’ll hire an investigator and find a way to get this woman. If she’s paying random strangers to stalk you, I will find out. I will get to the bottom of this.
